Meme Community Not Amused With Elon Musk As Twitter Shuts Down Dogecoin Tip Jar

News

ElonMusk's Twitter has officially shut down a popular tipping bot MyDogeTip used by the Dogecoin DOGE/USD community. This bot allowed users to easily tip each other on Twitter with the meme crypto.

What Happened: According to MyDogeCTO, one of the tipping bot designers, the bot got purged alongside many others as a part of Twitters new policy to combat automated spam.

We did receive a response that @MyDogeTip was suspended under the “Platform manipulation and spam” rule. They are considering our appeal and expect to hear back in 5-7. As mentioned, no affect on @MyDogeOfficial app other than Twitter sign up won’t work. MyDogeCTO (@MyDogeCTO) February 2, 2023

MyDogeCTO said, If TwitterSupport is going to shut down MyDogeTip they better be building something awesome for Dogecoin.

If @TwitterSupport is going to shutdown @MyDogeTip they better be building something AWESOME for dogecoin… Because otherwise it’s a tremendous FU to the $doge community. SMH! MyDogeCTO (@MyDogeCTO) February 1, 2023

Whats Next: Doge enthusiasts have spoken out on the seeming suddenness of Twitter's new API policy, which eliminates free access and requires all developers to pay for access.

Ouch, this sucks! Yo Elon, this is not cool (and I have a feeling it was done by mistake – but I might be wrong). Mishaboar (@mishaboar) February 1, 2023

'Doge Whisperer', a long-time Dogecoin enthusiast, told Benzinga that this change is not targeted at Dogecoin or its community, but is instead a move toward monetization for Twitter and all developers, companies, and bots that make use of their API.

Twitter, in an update on Thursday, decided to start charging for access to its API.Removing spam and generating revenue is a high priority for Twitter but there shouldve been a transition period or at least a heads up, Doge Whisperer said.

Despite Elon Musk's support for Dogecoin, last year when Twitter allowed users to tip each other in Bitcoin BTC/USD and Ethereum ETH/USD , Dogecoin was not officially added to the list.

Price Action: At the time of writing, DOGE was trading at $0.091, down 2% in the last 24 hours, according to Benzinga Pro data.
